Boarding houses. Boarding houses or units should provide appropriate protection and separation of boarders by age and gender. No individual house should have significantly poorer accommodation facilities or standards of welfare. Sleeping & recreational areas, toilet and bathroom facilities are reasonably separated for boarders of significantly different ages.
Free time. Boarders should have a sufficient amount of free time each day, with a choice of activities outside teaching time. Access to the internet should be supervised appropriately.
Boarder's views. Boarders have an opportunity to express their views either directly themselves or through a representative. These views are taken into account when developing practice.
Prefects. Prefects should be given specific duties and responsibilities. Staff should supervise this system to counter possible abuses of the role.
Staff and outside support. Boarders should be able to take a problem or welfare issue to any member of staff, not just those designated to deal with such issues. Boarders should also have access to someone they can contact who is not boarding or teaching staff.
