National Minimum Standards for Boarding Schools

6. Premises.

Boarding accommodation. Boarding houses, including dormitories and living areas, should be properly lit, heated and ventilated, furnished and maintained and accessible to any boarder with a disability. Accommodation should not be unnecessarily noisy.

The public should not have access to this accommodation. There are security measures in place to prevent unauthorised access by the public to boarding houses and other parts of the school.

Sleeping accommodation. This accommodation should be suitability furnished and provide appropriate separation between boarders in relation to gender, age groups and from accommodation for adults. The use of bunk beds should be exceptional for boarders aged over 8 years.

Study facilities. There should be facilities available for both organised and private study, either in or near the dormitories, somewhere I the boarding house or nearby in the main school building.

Toilets and bathrooms. There should have at least one toilet for every 5 boarders, which is accessible from the sleeping and living areas and have doors that provide privacy.

There should be at least one shower for every 10 boarders, with adequate supplies of hot water. Staff and boarders do not share the same facilities, or boarders of widely different ages.
