National Minimum Standards for Accommodation of Students Under 18 By Further Education Colleges

5. Premises.

Accommodation. Student accommodation does not lead to welfare concerns where students under 18 share with adult students or where accommodation is shared by students of the same sex. Students under 18 should not share accommodation with students of the opposite gender or adult students where it might be harmful to their welfare. The accommodation is adequately decorated, cleaned and maintained. Residential areas are not too noisy.

Security. Students have their own living area, not open to the public. There should be adequate security measures in place to stop unauthorized people accessing student accommodation.

Any surveillance equipment or CCTV is used to improve security and safety of students but does not intrude upon their privacy. They should cover bedrooms, toilet or washing areas, inside kitchens or common areas.

Bedrooms. Should be big enough to meet the needs of the student. No more than 4 students should share a room. All bedrooms should have a window that lets in natural light. They should be furnished so they can be used for study and should be lockable. If the rooms are not en suite there should be at least one toilet for every 5 students.
